Mexican Visitors

Since 2002 Gregg has been exhibiting in Mexico many times mostly at ICBC (Institute de Cultura de Baja California) and IMAC (Institute Municipal Arte y Cultura). Through this connection we have made many friends. Gregg brought Roberto Rosique for one show in Cal Poly Pomona Art Center and Ramón Carrillo last year for trio show at OCCCA. Since it was a great success, Gregg put on another show "The Great Wall of Chinga" which I posted last month.

This time, we invited four Méxican friends from Mexicali for the opening of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts. Eduardo is an art teacher and Israel works for the ICBC.

Currently Gregg is negotiating a "Day of the Dead" skull show in Méxicali Center for the Arts this fall including Chicano artists from California.

"Great Wall of Chinga" Show Smashing Success!!

“There is a great article on LA Times about your show.” One of Gregg’s artist friends Mike Maas e-mailed us. I went to buy the paper and sure enough there was a powerful essay recognizing Gregg’s effort to bring two countries together through art rather than to divide by the wall.

‘The Great Wall of Chinga’ show was a smashing success! Nearly thousand people came to see, thanks to the LA TIMES and other magazine’s articles. An owner of ‘Juxtapose (prominent art magazine)’ came and took many photos. It was good to be exposed to an art connoisseur of his caliber.

Artists from Mexican side were absolutely flabbergasted to see so many people came to see the show and were very grateful to be invited. I saw many friendly exchanges between Mexico/US artists and I foresee that there will be more joint art exhibitions in the future. I am happy to say that Gregg constructed a friendly bridge between the two countries. However small it may seem, the friendship tree may bloom and multiply some day.

The Great Wall of Chinga

This exhibit hopes to compare the similarity or distinction of Mexican and Chicano Artistas sharing life experiences yet distinctly juxtaposed in variant political worlds. With certain common bicultural traits as most border towns reflect this social phenomenon. This border phenomenon has existed historically in many cultures and early civilizations.

The border is a ‘Wall of Chinga (a colloquial term of abuse)’ because it has been the cause of much civic consternation. Some of the artificial and superficial elements of this interaction have made some unfortunate and deleterious misunderstandings. Artists by their assessments in their ‘obras’ help give visual articulations to some of those notions and proffered resolutions.

The turmoil and discord is met with diverse responses from the artists herein the gallery. Comparing these social realities make for the artistic responses which are displayed in this exhibition.

There are thirty artists from both countries.

EL PASO MUSEUM OF ART

To be asked to show at notable museum is artist’s dream. Only few would make it.

Gregg’s art has been exhibited at Albuquerque Museum, San Diego Living Art Museum

and The Marjorie Barric Museum in Nevada. But that was just one of many art works

that were accepted in competition.

But this time is a special invitation by a curator of El Paso Museum of Art.

The curator picked three of his works and asked to be exhibited for three months among

notable Chicano and Mexican artists. This means his painting will be in a museum catalogue.

When I began supporting Gregg 9 years ago I made a ‘10 year plan’ and the goal were to show

at notable museum in ten years. Here today, at 9th year, we reached to the first goal.
